How It Works
Deferment lasts for the entire service period, and then 180 additional days. If your studies are interrupted by a call to service, you can qualify for more deferment: 13 months after demobilization.
What You'll Need
A copy of your military orders. If relevant, proof of enrollment from your school's registrar.
You may also be able to have the interest rates on your loans reduced during service or qualify for other benefits while you are performing qualified military service through the Servicemember Civil Relief Act (SCRA). Check out our eBook The Military Smartbook For Defeating Student Debt to learn more, or talk to your servicer for more info.
How To Apply
Send the form to your servicer (the company that sends you the bills). If you don’t know who that is, you can go to the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS®) to find out.
